Was bisher nur MSDN- und Technet-Abonnenten vorbehalten war, ist nun für alle offiziell verfügbar. Microsoft hat das Service Pack 2 für Windows Vista oder Windows Server 2008 zum allgemeinen Download bereitgestellt. Ab sofort kann das Service Pack 2 für Windows Vista und Windows Server 2008 als 1,34 GB grosses DVD-Image oder als bis zu 577 MB großes Standalone-Paket für x86-, x64- oder ia64-Systeme in den Sprachen Englisch, Deutsch, Französisch, Spanisch und Japanisch heruntergeladen werden.

Wer das Service Pack 2 für Windows Vista oder Windows Server 2008 installieren möchte sollte vorher unbedingt das Windows Vista SP2 Vorbereitungs Update (KB947821) oder das Windows Server 2008 SP2 Vorbereitungs Update (KB947821) installieren. Dieses Update wird für das Einspielen des Service Pack 2 dringend benötigt. Erst nach einer erfolgreichen Installation dieses Updates kann das Service Pack 2 installiert werden.

Das zweite Service Pack für Windows Vista und Windows Server 2008 enthält neben neuen Verbesserungen und Korrekturen alle Updates, die seit Service Pack 1 veröffentlicht wurden, sowie Unterstützung für neue Hardware und Hardwarestandards aber auch neue Funktionen wird das Service Pack 2 enthalten, zum Beispiel:
