Microsoft Technet und MSDN Abonnenten konnten Windows 7 Release Candidate schon seit dem 30. April herunterladen. Ab sofort steht es, sowohl die 32-Bit- als auch 64-Bit-Version, jedem interessierten zum Download zur Verfügung. Für die Zuteilung des für die Installation erforderlichen Windows 7 Release Candidate CD-Keys ist eine Windows Live ID erforderlich. Wer den Windows XP Modus testen möchte, muss sich eine spezielle Version von Virtual PC, in der bereits Windows XP SP3 vorinstalliert ist, separat herunterladen.
Windows 7 Release Candidate wird bis mindestens Ende Juni 2009 zum Download zur Verfügungstehen, und es gibt keine Beschränkungen im Hinblick auf die Anzahl der Product Keys. Es wird keine Möglichkeit der Bestellung einer DVD geben - Download ist der einzige Distributionsweg.
